Dear Friends,
Like many people I have looked at the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico with feelings that verge toward despair. After spending 17 days in southern Louisiana this June, I know first-hand it is a sobering and frightening ecologic disaster with long-term economic consequences and even the potential for serious human health consequences.
As a physician, I think about all of the occasions when clean water is required for simple first aid, major healing and for life itself. During my entire time in southern LA everyone drank bottled water. This was not new to me as I have always done this when in New Orleans, starting when I lived there in 1994, when I heard repeatedly; "Don't drink the water."
I ask you now, when will we reach the limit of our ability to carry on despite the water being too suspect to drink? Will we run out of fresh water? And will the oceans become too contaminated to sustain life?
I ask you -- Do you think our current congressman, Erik Paulsen, is thinking about our well-being, our water and the ecosystem as he deems poorly regulated deep water drilling and big oil safe? I doubt it. I am sure most of you doubt it too.
Now is the time to put someone in the US Congress from Minnesota’s 3rd district who will look at the big picture. Someone who will see our current energy policy for what it is: a policy fueled by corporate greed and profits at the expense of our air, water, and land.
Let's all get behind Jim and put him into Congress. He needs the funds now to support his campaign and to get his message out to the voters in order to unseat Erik Paulsen. I have contributed to Jim's campaign and I plan to do so again. Please join me in contributing generously to Jim Meffert For Congress, where he will be our passionate voice for our environment and our future.
Sincerely,
