Hackett Endorsed by Former DFL Chair, U.S. Ambassador to U.N. Commission
Koryne Horbal: Hackett Is 'Great Role Model' for Young People Across Minnesota
HOPKINS -- Koryne Horbal, the first woman to lead the DFL Party and a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Special Commission on the Status of Women in the World, has endorsed Maureen Hackett in the race for the party's endorsement in the 3rd Congressional District.
Horbal, who also helped establish the DFL Feminist Caucus and served on the founding board of directors for Ms. magazine, issued the following statement:
"When I began with the feminist movement we used to say, 'the best man for a job is a woman.' I am proud to support Maureen Hackett for Congress not only because she is a woman candidate, but also because she is the best person to represent the 3rd District. Maureen's background as a veteran, a doctor, a mother and a small business owner give her such well-rounded experience, practical knowledge and empathy that I am thrilled at her candidacy. She presents a true contrast to the radical positions and lax representation of Erik Paulsen, and she is a great role model for young women -- and all young people -- across Minnesota."
Hackett, who has won seven of the first nine DFL conventions in the 3rd District and has earned two-thirds of the named delegates, said she was honored to receive Horbal's support.
"Koryne Horbal has done so much for women and all people across our state and country," Hackett said. "She embodies everything the term 'public service' means and is a real inspiration to me. I'm proud to have her support and will work hard each day to prove worthy of it."
Hackett has also been endorsed by the following groups and individuals:
Minnesota Women's Political Caucus
State Rep. Melissa Hortman, Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids (HD 47-B)
State Rep. Maria Ruud, Minnetonka, Eden Prairie (HD 42-A)
State Rep. Denise Dittrich, Champlin, Coon Rapids (HD 47-A)
State Rep. Linda Slocum, Richfield, Bloomington (HD 63-B)
Former Hennepin County Commissioner Mary Tambornino, Minnetonka
James Hiller, Minnetonka City Council Member
ArMand Nelson, Champlin City Council Member
Former State Sen. Becky Lourey, co-author of the legislation that created MinnesotaCare
Bob Ellingson, Minnetonka City Council Member
Kathy Nelson, Eden Prairie City Council Member
Maj. Gen. Harry Sieben, Jr., former speaker of Minnesota House of Representatives

Two Visions on Health Care
Dear Friends,
Next Saturday, as Jim Meffert and I lay out our visions for America's future at DFL conventions in Senate Districts 33 and 45, a coalition of right-wing interest groups will be fighting for the status quo on health care with a "Kill the Bill" rally in front of the state Capitol.
It's not clear at this moment whether Erik Paulsen will be attending that event. He generally tries to keep his ties to Michele Bachmann (a featured speaker) hidden and it's been nearly two months since his office even sent out a press release on health care. But make no mistake about it, this is what we'll be up against in the fall campaign.
Health care reform is long overdue. Each day that passes without progress another family risks bankruptcy if someone gets sick; another business has to put off plans to expand; and another parent is forced to make the painful choice between taking their child to the pediatrician and making a trip to the grocery store.
That's why I'm in this race. As a doctor who's worked in many systems, including Hennepin County Medical Center, I've seen the problems with the current health care system and insurance industry from the inside. As the wife of a small business owner, I've watched my husband deal with insurance costs that sky-rocket year after year. And as a candidate in this race, I've heard from so many people who are simply terrified about what will happen if they lose their job or when their COBRA benefits expire.
We can do so much better in this country and we must. President Obama's plans aren't perfect, but they do move us a big step closer to the day when we can finally relegate the phrase "health care crisis" to the scrapheap of history and begin rebuilding our economy so we can usher in a new era of opportunity for all.
When we move into the general election campaign, I won't back down when the Tea Party and related groups start attacking us. And when Paulsen accuses me in a debate of supporting reform efforts, I'll turn to him and ask "why don't you?"
Thanks, as always, for everything you're doing to help our campaign and our party. We've won seven of nine Senate District conventions and two-thirds of the total named delegates so far, but this is only the beginning. The next step is defeating Paulsen in November and then the hard work of moving our country forward begins.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail us at info@hackettforcongress.org or call us at (952) 938-0510. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you in the weeks and months to come!
Sincerely,
Maureen Hackett, M.D.

Clean Sweep Propels Hackett Closer to Showdown with Paulsen
Today we moved another big step closer to a showdown with Erik Paulsen this fall as Maureen won a clean sweep of DFL conventions in Senate Districts 32, 40, 41 and 42!
On the day, Maureen won 18 of 24 named delegates and stretched her lead in the race for the DFL endorsement to 30-15 in named delegates.
Each day that goes by, our campaign gets stronger and stronger. We're gaining great new supporters, building a strong team and laying the groundwork for victory in November!
By standing together over the weeks and months to come, we can win this congressional seat, build on our legislative majorities and finally send a DFLer back to the governor's office.
Thanks so much for everything you're doing to help make this possible. If we stand together, there's nothing that can stop us from moving our state and country forward.

One Step Closer to Defeating Erik Paulsen
Dear Friends,
After picking up big wins in Senate Districts 43 and 47 today, we've moved one step closer to building the coalition it's going to take to defeat Erik Paulsen in November.
After two weekends of Senate District conventions, we've established a clear lead in the race for the DFL endorsement, but there's still a lot of work ahead.
We look forward to working hard to earn your support over the days and weeks to come and hearing your ideas for how we can best go about moving America forward.
As always, please feel free to reach us with any questions you may have. You can contact us by e-mail at info@hackettforcongress.org and by phone at (952) 938-0510. We'd also love for you to sign up to join our team!
Thanks for everything you're doing for our party. If we stand together through Election Day and beyond we can do more than just defeat Erik Paulsen. We can usher in a new era of opportunity for all.
Sincerely,
The Hackett for Congress Team

Campaign Update: Winning and Building More Momentum
E-blast sent to DFL Senate District delegates at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22.
Dear Friends,
We aren't even two months into 2010, but I'm very excited about where our campaign stands as we head into the second round of DFL Senate District conventions this coming weekend.
Since the start of the year, our field staff -- which now numbers seven people and an Australian Shepherd -- has begun laying the groundwork for victory in November. We were the first campaign in this race to make it to your doors and we're proud that our staff and volunteers are closing in on 10,000 phone calls to delegates and strong Democrats. This is something we're going to continue and expand on through Election Day because personal connections are critical and have already given us so much insight into what Minnesotans are thinking and what they expect from the representatives they send to Washington.
Over the course of January and February, we ran five different ads on AM 950, allowing us to spread our message to potential delegates and to DFLers across the metro area who are eager to help us complete the process of turning this swing district "blue."
We closed 2009 with a $100,000 cash-on-hand advantage over the rest of the DFL field, which is helping us put in place the campaign infrastructure we'll need to defeat Erik Paulsen in November.
We have earned the support of the Stonewall DFL and the DFL Veterans Caucus -- the only two party caucuses to have endorsed in this race.
On Saturday, Feb. 13, we won the first Senate District convention held in the 3rd, picking up 2 of the 3 named subcaucus delegates selected in Coon Rapids.
But what I'm most proud of is that we haven't backed down from taking the right positions on the big issues. In the end, that's what this campaign is about and it's the attitude I'll carry with me to Washington as your next representative.
There is still so much work left to do, but based on what I've seen from DFLers across the district, I have no doubt that we can win this election and start moving our country forward beginning the morning after Election Day.
If you have any questions about our campaign, please feel free to e-mail us at info@hackettforcongress.org or call us at (952) 938-0510.
Thanks so much for everything you're doing to help our party. If we stand together over the weeks and months to come there's nothing that can stop us.
Sincerely,
Maureen Hackett, M.D.

Why We Need a Public Option and More Reforms
E-blast sent to Senate District Convention delegates at 12 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 20.
Dear Friends,
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report earlier today entitled "Insurance Companies Prosper, Families Suffer: Our Broken Health Insurance System." It's a sobering document, outlining sky-rocketing insurance costs across the country that are leaving millions of families and business owners struggling to keep their heads above water.
I understand this problem on a very personal level. As a doctor, I've watched patients fight to get needed care covered by their insurance companies. As the wife of a small business owner, I've witnessed my husband's company struggle with insurance rate increases year after year. As a candidate for Congress, I've heard from so many people who are scared of what will happen if they lose their job or when their COBRA benefits expire. And my own brother has had to go without insurance because his employer didn't provide it.
We've debated health care in our country for a century now and while the problem is clear to the American people, for too long the special interests in Washington have been able to block the progress we need. That's why I'm in this race -- because it's time to stand up and say enough.
As the 3rd Congressional District's next representative, I'll work to ensure every American has access to affordable and transportable health care by:
Supporting a public option that serves as a check against insurance industry excesses and gives the American people more choices and lower costs.
Supporting reforms so no American ever faces bankruptcy because they suffer from an illness and their insurance company won't cover the needed treatment.
Pushing for a renewed emphasis on less-costly primary care and more-effective preventative medicine.
Demanding that any government support for the health care system be invested directly in providing health care rather than padding insurance industry profits.
Supporting cost-control measures to lower health care costs and help preserve Medicare and Medicaid.
Thank you so much for everything you're doing to help our party win in November. There's so much on the line and we have a tough fight ahead of us, but I know that if we stand together nothing can stop us from moving America forward.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach us directly at info@hackettforcongress.org or 952-938-0510.
Thanks again! I look forward to hearing from you and working with you over the weeks and months to come.
Sincerely,
Maureen Hackett, M.D.

Hackett Scores Big Win in First SD Convention
Hackett Wins 2 of 3 Named Delegates
COON RAPIDS - Maureen Hackett, a DFL candidate in the 3rd Congressional District, scored a big victory at the Senate District 49 convention, winning 2 of 3 named sub-caucus delegates.
"There's still a long way to go until the CD-3 convention, but I'm happy with where we are right now," Hackett said. "DFLers are energized and already laying the groundwork for victory in November and I'm proud to be a part of that."
"By standing up for our values, we can finally guarantee all Americans access to affordable and transportable health care," Hackett added. "We can build the kind of schools that teach our children to innovate, compete and win in the global economy. And we can finally realize the full potential of clean, renewable, American-made energy."
Over the last few weeks, Hackett has won the support of the DFL Veterans Caucus and Stonewall DFL, the only two party caucuses to have issued endorsements so far.
