Maureen Hackett Seeks to Represent Minnesota's 3rd District in Congress

Today, psychiatrist and Air Force veteran Maureen Hackett announced her candidacy for the United States Congress. Hackett is entering the race to challenge first term Congressman Erik Paulsen in Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District which encompasses the western suburbs of Minneapolis. Her campaign website can be found at www.hackettforcongress.org.

"Growing up in a lower-middle class home and working hard to put myself through college and medical school, I benefited from the opportunities afforded to me by this great country, and I have been able to live the American dream," said Maureen Hackett as she announced her candidacy. "But it seems these days that the American dream is fading. And without responsible, accountable, and informed leadership in Washington, this dream is in serious jeopardy for future generations. I am running for Congress to restore these qualities to leadership, to raise up the middle class, and to make sure our children and grandchildren have even better opportunities than we had. I am running for Congress to revive the American dream and I ask for your support to do this."

Maureen Hackett has served the public throughout her career, as an officer in the Air Force, as a psychiatrist treating patients at Hennepin County Medical Center and Minnesota's state hospitals and as a teacher of Psychiatry at MN Security Hospital, HCMC, University of Minnesota, William Mitchell College of Law and Mayo Clinic. Dr. Hackett's concern for a healthy healing environment in state psychiatric facilities led to her writing, testifying and seeing passed into law a bill providing smoke-free grounds at these facilities. Hackett is a member of the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District Citizen's Advisory Committee and the League of Women Voters, serves as Chair of the MN Psychiatric Society Ethics Committee, and in 2006 was honored with the Distinguished Fellow award by the American Psychiatric Association.

Maureen Hackett was born into a large family in Cleveland, Ohio, grew up in Ohio and Illinois, graduated from Lake Forest College, Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Biology, graduated from medical school at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, and earned a Meritorious Service medal for her military service at England's Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath with the 48th fighter wing base. She served seven years as an Air Force Psychiatrist where her duties included treating active duty and their family and completing evaluations of military personnel requested by commanders in the field. Hackett transitioned out of the Air Force and into a fellowship year at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans specializing in Forensic Psychiatry. Forensic means dealing with legal issues. Dr. Hackett has a private forensic psychiatry practice and she is a member of the Hennepin Faculty Associates at Hennepin County Medical Center. Husband Roman Oliynyk is the CEO in a private software business in Minnetonka, MN, and daughter Marianna is now a freshman at the University of Virginia.
